Curriculum Vitae

Jurica Sorić was born on November 16, 1954, in Trogir. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FMENA) of the University of Zagreb in 1978. He then worked for a year as an engineer at the Končar Generator Factory in Zagreb. In 1980, he was employed as an assistant at the Chair of Mechanics and Strength of Materials of the Institute of Applied Mechanics at the FMENA. At the same Faculty, he received his Master’s degree in 1984, and Doctoral degree in 1989. He was appointed as Assistant Professor in 1990, Associate Professor in 1995, Full Professor in 2000, Full Professor with permanent tenure in 2005. He retired in 2020, and he was appointed Professor Emeritus of the University of Zagreb in 2021.

Visits and research at foreign universities. As a research scholar of the German foundation DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), he studied at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, from 1986 to 1988. He spent 9 months at the same University as a visiting assistant professor in 1992. In 1995, he received a prestigious research fellowship from the German Alexander von Humboldt foundation in the frame of which he conducted research for 19 months also at the Ruhr University Bochum. In 2003, he received a Fulbright research fellowship for research at the University of California Irvine (UCI), USA. As an alumnus of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, Dr. Sorić has frequently visited Germany as a visiting professor. In 2002, he conducted research at the University of Karlsruhe, and afterward, in the period from 2006 to 2010, he visited the TU Darmstadt and the University of Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) on several times for two weeks and up to 2 months. Also, as a research professor within the framework of a joint project with Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dr.h.c. mult. Dr.-Ing. E.h. P. Wriggers, he visited several times the University of Hannover for two weeks and up to a month in the period from 2014 to 2018.

Administrative duties. Jurica Sorić was the Head of the Chair of Mechanics and Strength of Materials at FMENA for 7 terms. At the same Faculty, he was a member of the Committee for human resources for 2 terms. He was a member of the Committee for postgraduate studies for 4 terms, and he served as the Chairman of that Committee in one term, from 2010 to 2012. He was a member of the Committee for teaching and research strategy of the FMENA for 3 terms. From 2008 to 2013, he was the Chairman of the doctoral study programme Theory of Structures, and of the doctoral programme Numerical Mechanics from 2014 to 2020. At the University of Zagreb, he was a member of the Committee for academic recognition of foreign educational qualifications for 3 terms, and a member of the Scientific Council for technical sciences from 2017 to 2021. In 2023, he was a member of the Project selection committee appointed by the Croatian Science Foundation Board.

Memberships in international scientific associations. Dr. Jurica Sorić has been a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), Udine since 2004. He was also a member of the Academic Assembly of CISM from 2004 to 2010. He has been a member of the Central European Association for Computational Mechanics (CEACM) since 2005. From 2005 to 2021, he was a Board member of CEACM, and President of CEACM from 2005-2008. He was a member of the General Council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) from 2009 to 2012, and from 2017 to 2021. He is a member of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS).

Memberships in national scientific associations. Dr. Sorić has been a Full Member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering since 1994 and was a member of its Scientific Council from 2009 to 2016. He was a member of the Board of the Croatian Alexander von Humboldt Club from 2016 to 2020. Currently he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Croatian Society of Mechanics, where he served as President from 2007 to 2009. In 2022, he was elected as an Honorary Member of the Croatian Society of Mechanics.

Prices and Awards. International prices and awards: CEACM Prof. Mang Award of the Central European Association for Computational Mechanics, for outstanding contribution in the field of numerical mechanics, 2023. ICCES Distinguished Fellow (ICCES: International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences), for the outstanding contribution to mechanics of shells, and development of the MLPG method, Reno, NV, USA, 2015. Fulbright Research Fellow, USA, 2003. Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, Germany, 1995. Scholarship of DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), Germany, 1986.

National prices and awards: Honorary member of the Croatian Society of Mechanics, appointed at the Assembly of the Croatian Society of Mechanics in 2022, for exceptional contribution to the scientific activities in the Society.  Large Medal of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Zagreb, for an exceptional contribution to the advancement of work, development and promotion of the Faculty, 2019. University of Zagreb Award Fran Bošnjaković, for the exceptional results in the field of scientific and professional activities as well as the science promotion and transfer knowledge in the field of technical sciences. Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award for scientific achievement in Republic of Croatia for year 2005 in the field of technical sciences. Josip Juraj Strossmayer Award for the most successful scientific publication in the year 2004 for the book Finite Element Method, Golden marketing-Tehnička knjiga, Zagreb 2004. Croatian Government Annual Award for Science in 2000.

Scientific activities. His research field is concerned with geometrically nonlinear and elastoplastic strength and stability analysis of thin-walled shell structures, including the formulation of advanced finite elements. Development of new meshless numerical methods. Development of new multiscale numerical algorithms for the modelling of deformation responses of heterogeneous materials and damage evolution at the micro level. In addition to complex engineering constructions, he also applied the algorithms developed to solving various problems in medicine. His current research is concerned with the application of artificial intelligence methods to numerical modelling of heterogeneous materials. According to the CROSBI overview, Dr. Sorić has been quoted with 293 publications.

He is the author of two scientific books (monographs) with his original contributions and one university textbook. He was Principal Investigator of five international and four national research projects. He organized five international conferences held in Croatia and was editor of the Conference Proceedings. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal Transactions of FAMENA published by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb and he was Associate Editor of this journal from 2003 to 2010.

Professional activities. He was a collaborator on two technological projects and one scientific-professional project in cooperation with the industrial companies. He is the author and co-author of more than 20 projects and studies, where he solved highly professional problems for industry, mainly concerned with the application of finite element methods to the analysis of complex engineering structures. Some of the challenging projects are Reliability and Strength Analysis of Wind Turbines, Integrity Analysis of Pressure Vessels, Structural Development and Computation of Mechanical Energy Absorbers of Trains, and Strength and Stability Computation of Thin-walled Wessels. He was the co-organizer of four advanced professional seminars at the Centre of Technology Transfer (CTT) of the University of Zagreb and several professional seminars for various companies. Together with his co-workers, he prepared and held a plenary lecture at the 7th international congress Mechanical Engineers Days in September 2021. He is the author of two chapters in the professional books. He reviewed more than 7 professional books and textbooks.

Teaching activities. Together with his colleagues, he introduced and modernized new study programs at the graduate and doctoral studies in Mechanical Engineering at FMENA. He introduced 4 new courses and new chapters in two courses in the undergraduate and graduate study programs in Mechanical Engineering. He created 6 new courses in the postgraduate doctoral programs. He introduced two e-courses into the curriculum. In 1997, together with his co-workers, he founded the Laboratory for Numerical Mechanics at the Institute of Applied Mechanics of the FMENA. He was the supervisor of 7 doctoral theses, 4 master’s theses, 4 bachelor theses and 27 graduate theses. He wrote one university textbook and two scientific books that can also be used as textbooks.

Activities in Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Dr. Jurica Sorić has been a member of the Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs since 2016, and the Scientific Council for Medicine and Technology since 2024. He has published 3 articles in the journal RAD, Technical Sciences. In 2011, during the presentation of his book Finite Element Method, he gave a lecture on the application of the finite element method. In 2002, he organized a lecture by one of the greatest authorities in the field of numerical mechanics, Prof. K.-J. Bathe, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. He intervened in the nomination of Prof. P. Wriggers, a prominent scientist from the University of Hannover, Germany, for the election to the Academy as corresponding member in 2018. He also organized the scientific lecture delivered by Prof. Wriggers. In the framework of a scientific symposium, Dr. Jurica Sorić gave the lecture on Advanced numerical methods in structural analysis in October 2023.

International affirmation. He was the leader of 5 international scientific projects. Together with the colleagues from the University of Hanover, Germany and LMT Cachan University, France, he is the editor of a scientific book published by Springer International Publishing. He gave more than 26 invited lectures at international scientific conferences and 2 lectures at international summer schools. In 2008, he delivered a lecture at the International Center for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) and thus entered the CISM Hall of Fame list. Dr. Sorić gave invited lectures at more than 10 universities, among them: Imperial College London, Universitaet Kassel, Leibniz Universitaet Hannover, Universitaet Stuttgart, University of California Irvine, KIT Karlsruhe, TU Darmstadt, TU Graz. He reviewed large number of articles proposed for publication in more than 20 leading scientific journals. He was a jury member of several doctoral theses at foreign universities. He was the organizer (chairperson) of 6 international conferences, a member of the organizing committee of 15 conferences, and a member of the scientific committee at more than 40 international conferences, where he participated in the organization of several thematic mini symposia. Within the scientific conference ICCES 2023, which was held in Shenzhen, China, he was a member of the Award Committee. Currently he is a member of the Scientific Committee of the international conference ICCES 2024, which will be held in Singapore in 2024, the scientific conference in Cape Town, and the World Congress on Computational Mechanics, WCCM 2024 which will be held in Vancouver in July 2024. In honour of Dr. Sorić, a special session was organized at an international conference held in Pula 2022. He served as a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Computers, Materials & Continua (CMC) from 2003-2008, and he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Computer Modelling in Engineering & Sciences (CMES) since 2003.
