Joseph Schlessinger, an Israeli American biochemist, and molecular biologist was born in Topusko on March 26, 1945. He emigrated to Israel in 1948 with his parents who survived the Holocaust. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Doctorate in Weizmann’s Institute in Rehovot and has been trained in the US where he has been living since 1985. He has lectured at several American universities. Since 2001, he has been a university professor and head of the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University.
He is the author of about 450 scientific papers in the fields of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology and other fields. He most studies tyrosine kinase, which is important for combating cancer. He had several important discoveries relevant to the fight against cancer. He received numerous awards, and in 2001, he was included in the list of the world’s 20 most cited scientists from all science fields.
His papers have been cited more than 100,000 times and thus Josef Schlessinger is the most cited living scientist of all scientists born in Croatia and the only scientist originally from Croatia to make the list of the world’s 20 most cited scientists. Schlessinger maintains good scientific ties with Croatian scientists and participates in scientific conferences in Croatia as a guest. Since 2000, he has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. In 2009, the President of the Republic of Croatia awarded him the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the image of Ruđer Bošković for scientific achievements.
He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2008.
