Professor Olga Šarc-Lahodny, PhD was born on April 26, 1928, in Požega and died on July 6, 2016, in Zagreb. She was elected a member of the Department of Mathematical, Physical and Technical Sciences in 1975, and moved to the Department of Technical Sciences after its establishment in 1997.
She graduated in 1953 from the Department of Chemistry and Technology at the Faculty of Engineering and received her PhD in 1962 from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Zagreb, where she began her academic career and until her retirement in 1998 worked as a full professor at the Faculty of Mining and Geology and Petroleum Engineering.
She studied postdoctoral studies in France (Museum d’histoire naturelle, Paris, 1966/1967) and in the United States (University of California, Los Angeles, 1967/1968). As a visiting professor, she has stayed and taught at universities and scientific institutes in the USA, Hungary, Ukraine, Norway, Germany, and Slovenia. She has been a member of many international scientific and professional associations and consultants of UNESCO.
She was scientifically preoccupied with complex corrosion problems and its mechanisms, as well as obtaining corrosion protection solutions, especially in an extremely aggressive environment. She has published numerous scientific papers in journals, proceedings of scientific conferences, revue publications and books. She was a member of organizing committees at many international meetings on corrosion and material protection. She was the president of the organizing committee of the Symposium on Corrosion Control by Coatings, Cathodic Protection, and Inhibitors in Seawater and the 223rd Event of the European Federation of Corrosion, organized by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Croatian Society for Material Protection (Dubrovnik, 4-7 October 1998).
At the Academy, she was a longtime head of the Institute for Corrosion Research and Desalination in Dubrovnik (1984–2016) and secretary general of the International Committee for Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminum Research (1972–2011). She actively participated in the work of the Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs and the Scientific Council for Technological Development.
