Since 1995. Rončević is a full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb. In 2018 was elected as a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Fine Arts.
Igor Rončević is a prominent representative of the so-called new painting in Croatian art. At first he was inspired by American abstract expressionism. Later he created an autonomous sign language of original forms and refined color (Izvođač slika, 1987). In his later works, associativity is emphasized (cycle Čovjek i pas, 1995., and Niz/serija, 2002–04; Tajna Nikole Tesle, 2006). He is also engaged in photography and writes poems (collection Pjesme 1, 2003).
