Gherardo Ortali, Italian historian, was born on September 21, 1943 in Fidenza. Graduated from the University of Bologna in 1967. He has worked at the University of Ferrara since 1971, where he headed the Istituto di Storia e Geografia, and since 1973 he is professor of Medieval History at the University of Venice. Full professor since 1980, at the Venetian University he directed the Institute (later Department) of Historical Studies from 1980 to 1989; from 1996 to 1999 he coordinated the Dottorato in storia sociale europea which brought together the Universities of Venice (administrative headquarters), Bologna, Padua, Trento and Trieste. He has been a full member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti since 1994, and was also the director of that Institute. From 1989 to 1990 he was director of l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes et Sciences Sociales in Paris. In the scientific publishing activity of prof. Ortalli is, among other things, co-editor of the Corpus statutario delle Venezie, founded and led the Pacta Veneta series and co-host of Studi veneti. He is also the coordinator of the Italian-French-German project to publish the register of the Venetian Senate.
He is a leading European scientist for the medieval problems of Venice and the Adriatic area, who in his top scientific works objectively and lovingly researched the history of Croatian and in other ways (by guiding young scientists, organizing conferences, etc.) helped the development of historical science in the Republic of Croatia.
He is a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2008 in the Department of Social Sciences.
