Curriculum Vitae

Herbert Mang was born in Vienna in 1942. He earned his degree in civil engineering in 1967 from the Vienna University of Technology, and became a Doctor of Technical Sciences in 1970 from his home University. He achieved his PhD degree in philosophy in 1974 at Texas Technical University. He was elected as a full professor in 1983.

At the Vienna University of Technology, he served as dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and vice-chancellor of the Vienna University of Technology. In 1979 he was a visiting professor at Tokyo University. As an expert of the United Nations, he spent 3 months in 1981 at the Zhengzhou Scientific Research Institute for Mechanical Engineering in China.

He was elected secretary general of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1995 and as its president in 2003. In the same year, he was elected as a member of the Scientific Council of the Federal Government of Austria, and as a member of the Management Board of the Austrian National Scientific Foundation.

His scientific activities are basic and applied research in the following areas: mechanics of deformable solids, structural mechanics, computational mechanics (static and dynamic stress analyses, stability of structures, ultimate load analysis of reinforced concrete structures, geomechanical investigations, numerical simulations of the mechanical behavior of concrete, rock, and soil, finite element technology, boundary element methods, coupling of finite element and boundary element discretizations), computational acoustics and multi-field analysis.

Some of his activities should be highlighted in particular: cooperation with the Croatian Society for Mechanics (HDM); support and assistance in joining HDM in international associations; holding a series of invited lectures at the HDM Congresses.

His last lecture was held in 2003 at the 40th anniversary of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb; he is responsible for the professional development of our young scientists at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Vienna University. He is the author of the international project “Freezing 3D deformations using ionizing radiation” in which the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture Zagreb participates. He held an invited lecture at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, organized by the Department of Technical Sciences in 2003.

He was elected as a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2004.
