Curriculum Vitae

Krista Kostial-Šimonović, a prominent Croatian doctor, was born in Osijek on December 19, 1923. She completed her medical studies in 1949 at the School of Medicine in Zagreb, where she received her Doctorate in 1955. On two occasions, she trained in the UK. From 1950 to 1988 she worked at the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health in Zagreb where she headed the departments of toxicology, biophysics and physiology of mineral metabolism. She was an associate professor at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb and a titular assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine. At these faculties, she was the head of the preparation of 20 master’s theses and 19 doctoral dissertations.

She became a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, in the Department of Natural Sciences, in 1991, and since 1981 she has been an outstanding member.

She investigated the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of heavy metals, the metabolism of calcium, zinc and some other essential microelements, and the metabolism of radioactive strontium. Her research has influenced the adoption of international recommendations on permitted exposure to heavy metals in the environment as well as recommendations on the daily intake of calcium into the body. She has repeatedly served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and other international institutions.

In Croatia and abroad, she has published about 280 original scientific papers in scientific journals, books and congress proceedings, led a dozen international projects and taught at international scientific conferences. Academician Krista Kostial-Šimonović received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, and in 1996 she was awarded the Order of Croatian Morning Star with the figure of Ruđer Bošković for her special merits in science.
