Željko Cvetnić was born in 1963 in Mraclin. He graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb. He is employed as a scientific advisor at the Croatian Veterinary Institute. He served as director for two terms and currently serves as deputy director and head of the Department of Bacteriology and Parasitology.

His scientific work predominantly includes research in the fields of epizootiology, bacteriology and infectious immunology.
He has achieved exceptional results in the development of human and veterinary epidemiology and bacteriology in Croatia. He made a notable contribution to scientific achievements in the research of bacterial zoonoses on a global scale: the discovery of new molecular features of some types of mycobacteria, which greatly influences the course of epidemiological research into tuberculosis. Especially important are his research on brucellosis in domestic animals. His contribution to proving species of the genus Brucella in bottlenose dolphins in the northern Adriatic is important.
