Biography

Suzana Coha (Zagreb, 1978) graduated in Croatian language and literature and comparative literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, where she has been employed since 2002 at the Chair of Modern Croatian Literature, the Department of Croatian Language and Literature (first as an assistant; from 2013 as an assistant professor; from 2019 as an associated professor). She received her PhD in 2009 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, and was awarded research scholarships in Ljubljana (2004) and Graz (2006).

She is the author of two books (Poetics and politics of Gaj’s Danica, 2015; The great Croatian Ljudevit Gaj. The charismatic and controversial leader of the Croatian National Revival, 2022). She collaborated on five bibliographies of Croatian literary periodicals (ed. by V. Brešić) and on one exhibition catalogue (ed. by A. Dodigović and S. Martinović), and co-edited two anthologies of scientific papers and two thematic magazines. She published over fifty scientific and over thirty professional papers in Croatian and foreign publications, and wrote sixty entries for five Croatian and three foreign encyclopaedias and lexicons.

She participated in one scientific project at the national level, two institutional scientific projects at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb and one institutional scientific project at the Institute for Croatian Language and Linguistics. She was the principal investigator of three institutional scientific projects at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. She was a member of the preparatory or organizing committees of several scientific conferences, and has been a member of the organizing and program committee of the scientific conference “Marija Jurić Zagorka – life, work, legacy” since 2021.

She has presented papers at numerous domestic and foreign scientific conferences and gave invited lectures at the scientific conference “Jan Paweł II and the idea of ​​słowiańskości” (Warsaw, 2015) and at the “XVI International Croatian Scientific Conference of the Regional Centers of the Scientific Institute of Croats in Hungary” (Pečuh, 2022, with C. Pavlović). She also gave invited lectures at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the University in Graz (2006) and at the Department of Languages ​​and Civilizations of Central and Eastern Europe at the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​of the University of Udine (2018).

She has been one of the editors for the Croatian Radio programme “Kozmopolis – literature in context” since 2016, a reviewer and member of the editorial board of the project “Zaprešić authors online” (by the Ante Kovačić Library, Zaprešić) since 2017, and a member of the editorial board of the edition “Centuries of Croatian literature” by the Matrix Croatica since 2021. In 2022, she was appointed the head of the literary studies section of the Zagreb Slavic School.

Areas of her scientific interest include Croatian 19th– and 20th-century literature, contemporary Croatian literature, comparative literature and media culture.

She was elected an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts on May 16, 2024.
