Curriculum Vitae

Petar Barišić was born on 7 October 1954 in Vrlika, where he attended elementary school. Barišić graduated from the School of Applied Arts Split in 1973. In 1978, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb, in a sculpting class mentored by professor Ivan Sabolić. From 1978 to 1981, he was a collaborator of professor Frano Kršinić’s Master Workshop.

Barišić exhibited at over seventy solo exhibitions and more than 150 group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad (Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Pécs, Fulda, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Aachen, Moscow, Paris, Osaka, Prague, New York, Melbourne, Vienna, Šibenik, Budapest…).

In 1993, he participated in the project “Recall Byblos“, at Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen. In 1995, he exhibited at Osaka Triennial 1995 – 6th International Contemporary Art Competition, while in 2003 he represented Croatia (along with three other authors) at the 9th  International Biennial in Cairo. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Hungarian-Croatian art group called “Chopor(t) horda“. His artworks are kept in numerous museums, galleries, and private collections in Croatia and abroad.

Barišić received a number of awards and acknowledgments, including the Grand Prix at the 5th  Triennial of Croatian Sculpting in 1994 and the annual award “Vladimir Nazor“ for visual arts (for his Monument to the Fallen Croatian Defenders in Đakovo, 2001).

2012 – City of Zagreb’s Award for the best exhibition in 2011, for the solo exhibition Gluho zvono/Deaf Bell (at St. Donat’s Church in Zadar and The Home of Croatian Association of Visual Artists, Bačva Gallery, Zagreb).

In 1996 Barišić received the Order of the Croatian Morning Star medal, with a figure of Marko Marulić, as recognition for distinguished merits.

Since 2002, Petar Barišić has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts as a docent, becoming a full professor in 2012. In 2018, he became a tenured professor of arts at the same educational institution.

During 2011 and 2012 he served as a mentor for the postgraduate doctoral study of sculpting at the Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb.

Ever since 1978 Barišić has been a member of the Croatian Association of Visual Arts, becoming a member of its Board of Directors in 2001. Since 2003, he has been a member of the Croatian Freelance Artists Association. During the 2003-2007 mandate, he served as a vice-chairman of the Croatian Association of Visual Artists. Barišić was also a member of the Council for Visual Arts of the City of Zagreb’s Department for education, culture, and sport during a 2005-2006 mandate. From 2008 to 2021 he was a member of the Management Council of Klovićevi dvori Gallery. In 1991 he served as a member of the organizational committee of the 4th Triennial of Croatian Sculpting, while in 1997 he was a member of the Art Committee of the exhibition U susret vukovarskom salonu / Towards Vukovar Salon. In 2002, he was a member of the Organizational Committee of the 37th Zagreb Salon of Applied Arts. In 2003 and 2006 he served as a member of the respectively 38th and 41st  Zagreb Salon of Architecture. Barišić created a sculpture which was given along with the annual award by INA and Croatian Culture Club for merits in promoting the Croatian culture in the world (1995-2007). In 2011 he served as a member of the international jury for the selection of artists whose sculptures would become part of the permanent collection of the sculpture park Forma Viva (Slovenia).

In 2021, a committee deciding on the award “Vladimir Nazor“ named Barišić a member of the jury for the domain of visual and applied arts, with a two-year mandate.

In 2012 Barišić was a member of the appraisal committee for the creation of a monument to Dr. Franjo Tuđman in Osijek, as well as a member of the appraisal committee of the 11th Triennial of Croatian Sculpting (Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb).

In 2013, Zagreb City Assembly named Barišić a member of the Management Council of the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb. In 2014, he was a member of the Commission deciding on the award given by the International Olympic Committee “Olympic Sports and Art” for 2013. In 2015, he was the president of the appraisal committee for tender concerning a monument to Dr. Franjo Tuđman in the City of Knin. In 2016, the Committee of “Vladimir Nazor” award named Barišić a member of the Commission for visual and applied arts, with a two-year mandate.

Croatian television made and broadcasted several documentary films on Barišić that were directed by Eduard Galić. In 2001, the scientific-educational department of Croatian television made a film about Barišić, directed by Vlatka Vorkapić and based on a script by Matko Sršen.

A 2016 documentary based on the script by Milan Bešlić portrayed a monument Slomljeni pejzaž / Broken Landscape that was created by Petar Barišić and his co-authors (architects Kata Marunica and Igor Ravlić). The monument was erected in memory of the Croatian television cameraman Goran Lederer who was killed during the Homeland War on Čukur Hill, near Hrvatska Kostajnica.
