Curriculum Vitae
Robert Matijašić was born in Pula on July, 26, 1957. He graduated in archaeology (A) and English language and literature (B) from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb in 1979. He worked at the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula, as a curator in the Department of Classical Archaeology (1979-1996). From 1991 to 1994, he was the director of the Museum. He completed his postgraduate studies in “Cultural History of the Eastern Adriatic Coast” in 1985 at the Centre for Postgraduate Studies of the University of Zagreb in Dubrovnik. He obtained his PhD in 1994 from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, with a thesis on the economic history of Roman Istria.
Since 1991, he has been an external associate and lecturer of the subject “Art of the Ancient World” in the Department of Visual Arts at the Pedagogical Faculty (now the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) in Rijeka. When the history programme was launched in October 1994 at the then Pedagogical Faculty in Pula (then part of the University of Rijeka), he also began teaching as an external associate the subjects “General History of the Ancient World” and “Ancient History of Croatian Lands”. In June 1996, he was employed at the Faculty in Pula as an assistant professor. He has taught at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, in the postgraduate archaeology programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and in the doctoral archaeology programme in Zadar. On two occasions, in 1999 and 2003, he taught in the postgraduate programme at the University of Padua (Scuola di specializzazione). He has held administrative positions at the Pedagogical Faculty (now the Faculty of Humanities) in Pula (vice-dean, dean), and later at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula (vice-rector, rector). He was promoted to the academic title of associate professor in 2001, and to the academic title of full professor in 2006. In 2012, he was granted the permanent title of full professor.
He has published nine books, 16 chapters in collective volumes, and 103 scientific papers in journals and proceedings both domestically and internationally. Additionally, he has published 104 professional and review papers and edited seven books (https://www.croris.hr/osobe/profil/14344). He has participated with presentations at 126 conferences, round tables, congresses, symposiums, and scientific meetings both in Croatia and abroad (Slovenia, Italy, France, Malta), almost all of which have been published in proceedings and journals. He has undertaken several short-term study visits to universities in Padua, Macerata, Oxford, Bordeaux, and the French School in Rome.
He has been principal investigator in two scientific projects funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, co-led two international bilateral projects (Croatia – Slovenia), and managed the Croatian part of an international scientific project funded by the European Union. He was a collaborator on the Croatian Science Foundation project “Roman Age Transformation and Reuse of Prehistoric Hillforts in Istria – Analysis and Case Study”, and from 2018 to 2021, he led the Croatian Science Foundation scientific project “Archaeological Landscape in the Sustainable Development of Tourism in the Municipality of Vrsar”. He has served as a member of the evaluation panels for project applications of the Croatian Science Foundation, the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS), and the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (PRIN). Since 2021, he has been leading the project “Archaeological Landscape of the Municipality of Vrsar – Orsera”, funded by the Municipality of Vrsar – Orsera, which also serves as a practical training base for archaeology students.
He was the editor-in-chief of the journal “Tabula (Journal of the Faculty of Humanities in Pula)” from 1999 to 2005, and he is a member of the editorial board and the scientific council of several journals: “Annales” (Koper), “Acta Histriae” (Koper), “Agri Centuriati” (Pisa – Rome), “Aquileia Nostra” (Aquileia), “Atti e Memorie della Società Istriana di Archeologia e Storia Patria” (Trieste), “Picus – Studi e ricerche sulle Marche nell’antichità” (Macerata), “Acta Medico-Historica Adriatica” (Rijeka), “Italia Epigrafica Digitale” (Rome), “West&East. Rivista della Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici” (Trieste), and “Archeologia Veneta” (Padua). Since 2015, he has been the president of the Čakavski sabor Žminj (Žminj), and since 2017, the president of the Humanistic Society Histria (Koper).
As a contributor to the book “Kroatien in der Antike,” he was the recipient of the INA Award for the Promotion of Croatian Culture in the World in 2008 and the Annual “Josip Brunšmid” Award from the Croatian Archaeological Society for the year 2009. In 2013, he received the Paul J. Scheuer Prize from the Academy of Non-profit Sciences in Erfurt, Germany (2013). In April 2023, he was awarded the Order of the Croatian Interlace “for outstanding contribution and special merits achieved through scientific research in the fields of archaeology, ancient history, and Latin epigraphy of the Croatian territory in antiquity.” In October 2023, at the annual assembly of the Croatian Archaeological Society, he was honored with the “don Frane Bulić” Award for lifetime achievement.
