Curriculum Vitae
Sven Lončarić was born in Zagreb in 1961. He earned a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Master of Science degrees from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zagreb, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. He was awarded the Fulbright scholarship in 1990 and he started doctoral studies in the USA. He received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Cincinnati, OH, the USA in 1994. After earning his doctoral degree, he continued his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, where he established a research laboratory for image processing. Dr. Lončarić held the position of assistant professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJ, USA, from 2001-to 2003. Since 2003, he has worked as a professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb.
Dr. Sven Lončarić is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, with permanent tenure, at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia. His main areas of research interest are theory and applications of image processing and analysis, artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks, and deep learning. He has investigated applications of image processing and computer vision in diverse areas such as medical image analysis, color image enhancement, scene illumination estimation, visual quality inspection, product image analysis, advanced driver assistance systems, and ultrasonic image analysis for non-destructive testing.
According to a Stanford University study of the most influential world scientists, published in 2021, he has been featured on the list of the top 1% world’s scientists in the category “Artificial Intelligence – Image Processing”. With his students and collaborators, dr. Lončarić has published more than 260 publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences that were cited more than 4900 times (according to Google Scholar as of May 2022).
Dr. Lončarić was a principal investigator for 16 scientific projects and national coordinator for 24 scientific projects funded from private and public, national, and international sources. Many projects were in collaboration with the industry where numerous innovations were created for which he and his collaborators received several awards and recognitions.
During his career, dr. Lončarić has introduced several new courses in the teaching programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. He was the leader of a project aimed at the development of the first university master’s degree program in biomedical engineering in Croatia, which will provide a new qualification “master’s in biomedical engineering”.
Dr. Lončarić served as a member of numerous committees at the national and university level including the Area Scientific Council for Technical Sciences of the National Council for science, high education, and technological development, Republic of Croatia, and the Council of Technical Sciences Area, University of Zagreb. From 2008-to 2010, dr. Lončarić was the Head of the Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. From 2012-to 2016, he has served as the Chair of the Committee for Research and International Collaboration at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing.
During his career, dr. Lončarić was active in developing a new research infrastructure in Croatia. He founded the Image Processing Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. In 2012, he founded and directed the Center of Excellence for Computer Vision at the University of Zagreb bringing together research groups in image processing and computer vision theory and applications from seven faculties at the University of Zagreb. Since 2015, dr. Lončarić has been a co-director of the Center of Research Excellence for Data Science and Cooperative Systems, which brings together 13 institutions in Croatia, and a director of the Research Unit for Data Science. In 2019, with colleagues, he initiated the formation of the FER Center for Artificial Intelligence and has served since as its director.
