Curriculum Vitae
Matko Čikeš, a Croatian doctor, was born in Žeževica near Omiš on September 10, 1936. He completed his medical studies in Zagreb in 1961 and his specialization in internal medicine in 1969 in Basel. Devoting himself to oncology, from 1969 to 1973 he worked at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm studying cancer immunology.
Since 1973 he has been active in Lausanne, where he founded and later led the Medical Center and Cancer Institute in 1987.
He studies the immunology of malignant tumors, gave yield to viral etiology of cancer. He contributed to the understanding of the pathogenesis of malignant tumors by setting the hypothesis, later accepted in science, that the decisive event in the malignant transformation of the cell is an abnormal expression of hormonal receptors, so the application of these findings resulted in the endocrine treatment of some types of tumors. He was a visiting professor at the Zagreb School of Medicine.
Since 2002 he is a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
