Curriculum Vitae
Jože Maček was born on 28 October 1929 in Olešče near Laško. Doctor of Agronomic Sciences (Bonn, 1964), Doctor of Economics (Belgrade, 1976), Doctor of Historical Sciences (Ljubljana, 1989), Professor of Phytopathology, Forest Phytopathology and phytopharmacology at the Agronomy Division of the Faculty of Biotechnology in Ljubljana. He graduated from the said Faculty in 1959, and immediately became Assistant Lecturer at the same institution. In 1968, he completed his BA studies at the Ljubljana Faculty of Economics. In 1966, he was named Lecturer at the Faculty of Biotechnology, Assistant Professor in 1969, Associate Professor in 1972, Full Professor and Head of the Phytomedicine Institute in 1975. He is full member of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1995. He retired in 1997.
His research work was conducted in several scientific areas. He began by examining the micofloristics, primary and secondary parasitism and the developmental cycles of parasitic fungi and their resistance to systemic fungicides. Maček found a substantial number of new species of parasitic fungi and several new species of their host plants. While abroad, he studied the biochemical relationship between host plants and parasites of various physiological parameters. Maček studied the hitherto almost completely unknown Slovenian hyponomological fauna, and discovered close to 800 new species, some of which were also newly discovered species in the South and South-Eastern Europe, as well as a considerable number of previously unknown host plants.
In the field of phytopharmacology, he analyzed the potential negative impacts of different herbicides on soil microorganisms even parasitic). He explored the contamination of agricultural crops and soil residues on the territory of Slovenia, discovering they were relatively mild in both plants (crops) as well as soils. Maček was the first Slovenian scientist to establish an appropriate monitoring, which later developed into a comprehensive annual monitoring of contamination of agricultural products.
He has published several dozens independent scientific, professional and popular science publications, and 5 university textbooks. He also published over 350 scientific texts and over 3.000 popular science compositions. He has translated more than 20 professional science publications. He also authored numerous expertise texts and research reports. For 25 years, he was Editor in Chief of the Research Reports of the Faculty of Biotechnology (now Acta Agriculturae Slovenica) and Editorial Board Member of the editorial boards of several national and international journals. He has mentored nine doctoral, 14 master’s and 98 university graduates. Maček was a member, president or vice-president of various faculty, university, and federal and republic Ministry councils and commissions.
He is a corresponding Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1998.
