Curriculum Vitae

Ignacij Voje, a Slovenian historian, was born on February 28, 1926 in Ljubljana. He attended elementary and secondary school in Ljubljana, where he graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1951 with a degree in general and national history. In the same year, he was selected as an assistant in the subject History of the Southern Slavs at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. At the same faculty he received his Doctorate in 1964 with the work Credit trade of Dubrovnik in the Middle Ages. He was elected assistant professor in 1967, as associate professor in 1975, and as a full professor in 1980. Professor Emeritus of the University of Ljubljana became a professor in 1996.

Prof. Voje has published more than 170 scientific and professional papers in domestic and foreign editions, eight of them are books. These papers show a wide range of the author’s research areas, for example some issues from the history of the Slovenian people, with a focus on Slovenian-Turkish relations in the late Middle Ages and at the beginning of the new age period, identifying the consequences that Turkish break-ins inflicted on Slovenian countries. Prof. Voje primarily credited Croatian historiography and knowledge of Croatian history with the study of the history of Dubrovnik in the Middle Ages, especially its economic development. It should be noted that his scientific research on Dubrovnik’s history relied primarily on his many years of work in the Dubrovnik Archives. Prof. Voje regularly came to Dubrovnik for decades between 1953 and 1988 and systematically researched Dubrovnik archival material, and on the basis of archival research, numerous scientific contributions and books were created, in which, very often for the first time in historiography at all, he processed certain areas from the economic history of medieval Dubrovnik. At the heart of his scientific research was the trade of Dubrovnik in the Middle Ages, especially credit, whereby knowledge of the area relied on wide and thorough research into numerous special issues, especially trading technology in late medieval Dubrovnik, with a baseline in Dubrovnik’s archival springs. Synthesis of all research by prof. Voje relating to the trade of medieval Dubrovnik was the book Credit Trade in Medieval Dubrovnik (Sarajevo, 1976).  As a whole, relying on the archival material of the Dubrovnik Archives, this book is still the most important, fundamental contribution of the overall modern historiography to the research of trade and trading business of medieval Dubrovnik.

Prof. Voje, with his many years of fruitful research on the history of Dubrovnik, has significantly improved the knowledge of the history of the Croatian people and thus indebted croatian historiography.

He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2012.
