Curriculum Vitae
Josef Zemann, an Austrian mineralogist and crystallographer, was born on May 25, 1923 in Vienna, where he completed his studies in mineralogy and crystallography in 1946 and received his Doctorate in the same year. From 1951 he was an assistant professor, and since 1966 he has been a full professor of mineralogy and petrology at the University of Vienna. From 1953 to 1963 he was director of the Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the University of Goettingen, and from 1967 to 1983 he was director of the Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the University of Vienna. Since 1972, he has been a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of many other academies and societies.
The main area of his research was the crystalline chemistry of minerals and inorganic compounds. He excelled in field research of minerals, rocks and mineral raw materials, in the synthesis of minerals with low hydrothermal conditions, as well as in the study of special problems in geochemistry. In his honor, the mineral zemanite was called.
Josef Zemann also collaborated with Croatian scientists in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, crystallography and ore deposits and has given lectures in Zagreb on several occasions.
He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1997.
