Life And Assignments

University professor, literary theoretician, essayist and critic, politician; in 1990, Minister of Education, Culture and Sport; in 1992, an MP (House of Representatives of the Parliament of Republic of Croatia - Sabor), currently (Last update Jan, 12. 1998.) the President of the Croatian Sabor and Vice-Precident of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences - HAZU.
Born 2 December 1930 in Zagreb. Attended primary school (1937-1941) and secondary school (gimnazija) (1941-1949) in Zagreb. Earned his degrees: B.A. (the Croatian Language and Literature) from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1955 and Ph.D. with a dissertation on Stablo Ujevi}eve poezije (The Tree of Ujevi}'s Poetry) in 1975. Worked as an editor of the "Vjesnik" daily, the director of Drama, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (1958-1960), the editor-in-chief of the publications of the "Matica hrvatska" (Central Croatian Cultural and Publishing Society) (1965-1972). Edited the culture section of the following newspapers: "Vjesnik", "Vjesnik u srijedu", "Telegram", as well as periodicals: "Izvor", "Krugovi", "Republika", "Literatura" and "Kritika".
First, assistant professor in 1960, next, full professor of Literature Studies at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb.
In 1963-1964, carried out research in Paris for a year, preceded by a three months' stay in Italy, which resulted in articles, essays, studies and a book entitled Baudelaireovi cvjetovi zla (Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil).
On the Editorial Board of the "Five Centuries of Croatian Literature" book collection; edited the "Arion" books. The editor-in-chief, a fundamental book collection on "Centuries of Croatian Literature". Edited so far hundreds of books and a series of selected works by Croatian authors. Compiled critical panoramas, surveys and anthologies: Hrvatska moderna (Croatian Literary Modernism), Sarajevo, 1960; @ivot pod reflektorima (Life in the Limelight - An Anthology of Contemporary Croatian Drama), Zagreb, 1961; Hrvatski pjesnici izme|u dva svjetska rata (Croatian Poets between the Two World Wars), Belgrade, 1963; Panorama hrvatske knji`evnosti XX. stolje}a (A Panorama of the XXth Century Croatian Literature), Zagreb, 1965; Zlatna knjiga hrvatskog pjesnistva (A Golden Book of Croatian Verse), Zagreb, 1970; become a Croatian Writers' Association - DHK member in 1951. An active "Matica hrvatska" and P.E.N. Fellow, since 1987 also a Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (F.C.A.). Some of his works translated into Polish, Russian, Czech, English and French.
1965-1967, member of the Municipal Committee of the League of Communists (SK) of Zagreb, next expelled from the Committee and the party as a Croatian nationalist, on account of the "Declaration on the Status and Appelation of the Croatian Literary Language."
In 1972, arrested together with a group of "Matica hrvatska" officials (Tudjman, Djodan, Gotovac and others) and sentenced to one-and-a-half years' strict imprisonment for and "attempted overthrow and cange of the state system". Since 1990, holding a number of posts, including that of the artistic director of the "Jadran Film" company; currently vice-president of the Telecommunications council and a member of the Croatian Democratic Union - HDZ Presidency.
