The Linguistic Research Institute was founded in 1984 as a working unit of the Department of Philological Sciences. Its activities focus on the study of Croatian and other European languages and general linguistic themes, with a special emphasis on dialectology, etymology, contact linguistics, phraseology, linguistic geography, toponymy and onomastics.
