The Archaeology Division was founded in 1949. Its main tasks include an interdisciplinary archaeological and anthropological study of the classical and medieval periods in Croatia. The archaeological explorations focus on the study of sources and material culture during the Romanization and Christianization processes in the Roman province of Pannonia (northern Croatia), which form the basis of our understanding of the Croatian medieval period. Archaeological explorations generally focus on the reconstruction of conditions and forms of life of the Croatian population and the study of their adaptation to changes in ecological and cultural systems.
The division's collections, which have been put together over many years of field research, include valuable archaeological finds of neolithic cultures and a systematically organized collection of human osteological materials, numbering over 1,200 skeletons.
The researchers at the Archaeology Division have developed extensive scientific co-operation with other archaeological and anthropological institutions, both at home and abroad.
