Born in Blato, Korčula, district of Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1922; received his Doctor of Medicinae Universae (M. D.) in 1947, followed by his Doctor of Medicinae Scienciae (D. Sc.) from the University of Zagreb. In addition to residency work of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery completed in Zagreb, he attended the University of Paris in 1952, the Institute of Laryngology and Otology of London in 1958, the Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center as a Research Fellow in 1963-1964, and the Medical College of Wisconsin as a Research Associate and Visiting Professor in 1972.
From 1956 he was Assistant Professor, then Associate prof. (1958) professor 1961 and full professor 1967 in the Department of ORL at the Zagreb University, as well as Senior Hospital Medical Officer at the "Sestre milosrdnice" University hospital. From 1961-1965 he held the position of Co-Chairman of the Department of ORL at the University Hospital and then became Chairman of this Department in 1966, which he maintained until 1988.
Since 1964 he has been Director of the Institute for Research of the Ear and Respiratory Tract, and since 1969, attending Otolaryngologist at the Central Institute for Tumors and Allied Diseases, Zagreb. Between 1959-1987 he served as consultant and founder in the Otolaryngology Hospital for the Rehabilitation and Treatment of Respiratory Organs in Crikvenica, Croatia. He was Director of the Scientific Programs of the Central Institute for Tumors and Allied Diseases and is now their consultant for Head and Neck surgery. He is also Professor of Otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the Zagreb School of Medicine, and a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1975, and of the Croatian Medical Academy since 1971.
He was a founding member and President of the Croatian League for the Fight against Cancer, as well as a member of the Commisson on Cancer Campaign and Organizationof UICC (Geneva) between 1970-1974, and was a member of the UICC Council from 1974-1982. In 1975 he was President of Collegum Otorhinolaryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum. In May, 1978, he was elected Vice-President of the Association of European Cancer Institutes Directors. He is a member of many other international societies and has published more then 120 scientific papers, more then 200 expert medical papers and other articles and eight books in the field of Otorinolaryngology and plastic Head and Neck Surgery. He is editor-in-chief of Medical Encyclopedia, Medical Lexicon, Medical Dictionary (including also veterinary and dental terminology), founder and editor-in-chief of two scientific journals: Symposia Otorhinolaryngologica, Zagreb, Croatia and Libri Oncologici. Through years he has been living and working around Europe and other continents.
His research activities include: head and neck cancer, lymphology, esthetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery, application of radioactive isotopes and application of Interferon in clinical practice. He is creator of microlaryngostroboscope.
His surgical activities include: approximately 420 major head and neck cases per year in the field of cancer, reconstructive surgery; approximately 1200 head and neck cases in University Department and in the Central Institute for Tumors and Allied Diseases, Zagreb. For the innovative contribution in rhinoplasty he received a world Award at the International Congress of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, and was honoured for his life achievement in 1993.
Present position:
He was elected Head of Department of Medical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1989, and vice-president of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts for the first time in 1991, and reelected in 1994. President of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since Dec. 1997.
He is as well the Consultant of Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital "Sestre milosrdnice" in Zagreb.
