Education:

  • 1984 - studied organ at the Institute of Ecclesiastical Music of the Catholic College of Theology in Zagreb, from which she graduated in 1984 while simultaneously earning a bachelor’s degree (B. A.) in Croatian literature and the Croatian language from the College of Liberal Arts, University of Zagreb.
  • 1988 - graduation thesis (tutor Franjo Grčević, Ph. D.), Characteristics of Narrative Discourse in Andrić’s “Prokleta Avlija”, published in magazine “Revija”, Osijek.
  • In 1990, she earned a master’s degree (M. A.) in the history and aesthetics of the Croatian sacral song and hymnody (thesis advisor - Josip Bratulić, academician).
  • In 1998, she earned her doctorate (Ph. D.) with a dissertation on Croatian ecclesiastical hymnody of the 19th Century (thesis advisor: Josip Bratulić, academician).

Career, memberships:

  • 1986 - employed as a teaching assistant at the Division for the History of Croatian Literature, Institute for the History of Croatian Literature, Theater and Music under the auspices of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
  • Since 1986 she is a member of Croatian Association of Music Artists. She subsequently studied concert interpretation with Prof. Čedomil Dugan and the interpretation of the Old French masters with Prof. Olivio Repec, following the methods of the famed Parisian organist Marie-Claire Alain. The Jesuit organist and composer Lorand Kilbertus taught her the rules of liturgical playing. Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek has concertized extensively as a soloist and accompanist in her native Croatia (Summer Festival at the Zagreb Cathedral, Varaždin Baroque Festival, Osor Music Festival, Split Summer Festival, Dubrovnik, Šibenik, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, Hvar etc.), as well as in Austria (Church of St. Augustine, Vienna), France (Church of St. Peter, Paris), Germany, Spain, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and United States (Pittsburgh,  Washburn University and Kansas City). She has performed with the Croatian Radio/Television Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and recorded for radio and television. She has also recorded four CDs. For twenty years, she served as an organist in the Jesuit Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Zagreb. For a period of time, she also played organ for the liturgical needs of the former American Consulate in the Evangelic church in Zagreb. Dr. Mihanović-Salopek is an organist at the Church of St. Marcus Stephanus Crisinus [sv. Marko Križevčanin] in Zagreb.
  • From 1988 to 1998, she was a literary critic and theoretician on the editorial board of the journal “Umjetnost i dijete” [Art and the Child], and since 1995, she has been a member of the National Commission for Children’s Books of the Republic of Croatia. She is also a member of the Croatian Association of the International Federation of University Women (since 1999).
  • On April 11, 1997 was named an honorary corresponding member of Mariological Academy in Rome (Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis).
  • 1999 - became a senior assistant.
  • 2000 - doctoral thesis published under the title Croatian Hymnody of the Nineteenth Century, “Alfa”, Zagreb.
  • 2002 - became a research fellow at the Institute for the History of Croatian Literature, Theater and Music, under the auspices of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
  • Since 2003 editor of magazine “Musica sacra” in  Zagreb.
  • As a scholar and performer, Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek is listed in Who is Who in Croatia andthe literary encyclopedia published by Leksikografski zavod.

Activities at the Division:

  • In 1986 did research on bibliography of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski, for the scientific project Complete Works of Ksaver Šandor Gjalski.
  • From 1987 till 1989 worked on the scientific project Complete Works of Ante Kovačić; edited VI. volume of Kovačić’s narratives (Fiškal, Baruničina ljubav, Među žabari).
  • Research in Vjenceslav Novak’s musical bibliography as a preparatory stage for the beginning of the project Complete Works of Vjenceslav Novak.
  • 1991 - 2001 - was a contributing scholar to a critical edition of the Complete Works of Milan Begović in 24 volumes, prepared by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. She did research regarding bibliography in Croatia and Hungary as well as text collation, and currently, she is engaged in the scientific project Croatian Literary Historians.
  • In her scientific studies of early and modern Croatian literature, she is particularly engaged in the research of genres of Croatian spiritual and ecclesiastical literature, an area insufficiently covered by research until now. In addition, she also pays special attention to contemporary Croatian literature for children and youth.

Activities outside the Division:

  • Dr. Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek is an associate of the educational division of Croatian Radio/Television (HRTV), and has written scenarios for a number of television programs celebrating the Croatian cultural heritage. One of her films, Stella maris Hrvatskog zagorja, was presented in German translation on April 24, 2004 as part of “Croatian Cultural Days” in Freiburg (Mozartsaal des Erzbischöflichen Palais).

Participation in scholarly symposia:

  • As a lecturer on Croatian hymnody, Dr. Mihanović-Salopek has spoken before the International Mariological Congress, Kevelaer, Germany, 1987; the International Mariological Congress, Huelva, Spain: 1992, Czestochowa, Poland: 1996, Rome, Italy: 2000 and 2004; the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, Boston, 1996; the College of Liberal Arts, Pécs, 2002; and the Slavic Department of the Lorand Eötvös University, Budapest, Hungary, 2003.

  • Author of four scholarly books on Croatian hymnody and religious literature and thus far has published over ninety professional publications in various proceedings and journals (the proceedings of the Croatian Historical Institute in Vienna, “Acta Congressus Mariologici-Mariani Internationalis” in Rome; proceedings of the Hvar Theatrical Festival in Split,“Forum”, “Republika”, “Kolo”, “Studia etnologica croatica”, “Revija” etc.).
  • She has edited and written the introductions to a number of anthologies and other books.
