Prof. Dr. Sc. Vlasta Piližota enrolled Faculty of Agronomy and Food Technology (Department of Food Technology) University of Osijek, graduating in 1976. She emplloyed with High School in Osijek as professor of Chemistry and Physics from 1976. to 1979. She received her M.S. degree in Chemistry, at the University of Zagreb in 1983. and Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology, from Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology University of Zagreb in 1985. Since 1979. till now she is with Faculty of Food Technology University J.J. Strossmayer in Osijek, Croatia.
She has been assistant, teaching assistant, associate professor, and now full professor of Fruit and Vegetable Processing and Preservation, Food Chemistry, at undergraduate study and of Developments in Fruit and Vegetables Processing and Preservation, Development of New Food Products, Waste Management in Food Industry, and Food Chemistry at postgraduate (Ph. D.) study, and Attainments in Processing of Vegetative Origin Raw Materials Including HACCP Elements II, Rapid Methods in Food Analysiss, and Development of New Food Products at professional study (Food Safety and Quality).
She was visiting professor at Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology University of Zagreb, and at Biotechnological University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and at University of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Piližota was Vice Dean (1991-1994), and as Dean (1994-1998) at Faculty of Food Technology University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek.
She was participated in a several scientific projects (duration from three to five years) concerning fruit and vegetables processing technologies. She did considerable research on aroma composition of different food, thermophysical an rheological properties of foodstuffs, inhibition of browning of fruit and vegetables (changes in minimally processed fruit and vegetables), sanitation and desinfection (microbial safety) of food, etc.She was leader scientist on eight international projects (Croatian-US, Croatian-Slovenian, Croatian-Italian, Croatian-Bosnian and Herzegovian), and at the moment she is leader scientist of one national (Croatian) scientific project. She participated in one projects (FP6 ‘’FutureFood’’) financed by EU Commission and one TEMPUS (EU) project (High Education Learning Project - HELP) in which she took a part giving lectures (training) for fruit and vegetable producers and processors in Croatia.
She was mentor on a number of B.S. and on several M.S. and Ph.D. thesis.
Many times she participate as visiting scientist in scientific research with USDA-ERRC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (from 1988 to 2001/2002), Stazione Sperimentale per l'Industria dele Coserve Alimentari in Angri (NA), Italy, and at Biotechnological University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
She published aproximately 120 scientific and professional papers, and more than 20 projects an studies for plants for fruit and vegetable processing. During her professional career she participated at numerous meetings, domestic and international.
She is a member of a number of professional associations: Institute of Food Technologists-IFT, U.S.A.; United Fresh, U.S.A.; Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts - HAZU, Croatian Society of Food Technologists, Biotechnologists and Nutritionists, Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers and Technitians, European Food Chemists Division - EuChem Division, European Hygienic Engineering Design Group (EHEDG).
She has been named, in 2004, national expert (official representative of Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport) in European Commission for food quality and analysis, and in 2006 in Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) till October 1, 2007, when she joined EU Commission (Brussels, Belgium) as a Seconded National (Croatian) Expert (SNE) in Directorate General Research (DG RTD), Unit E.3: Food-Health-Well being for one year (till 30 September 2008). Since September 2010 she is, again, official representative of Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, in EC Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR).
She is a Head of Department of Food Technologies at the Faculty of Food Technology Osijek, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, Croatia.
She is (from February 2009) a Director of The Institute for Scientific and Artistic Work of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Osijek.
She is Editor-in-Chief of the scientific-professional journal Croatian Journal of Food Science and Technology (started by Faculty of Food Technology Osijek, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, Croatia on 2008), as well as the member of the Editorial Bord of 4 journals.
On 13 June 2012 she has been appointed as a GHI (Global Harmonization Initiative) Ambassador for Croatia.
On 14 July 2013, at the IFT 2013 Meeting (Chicago, USA), she was aworded by IFT (International Food Scientists Association), for the first time, as CFS – Certified Food Scientist, among 1441 in the whole World.
